Most of the applets on this site read and write information to files. Since applet file choosers always start with your home directory, and since you probably don't want to clutter up your home directory with data files, I recommend that you establish a working folder directly under your home directory. A single working directory will suffice for all the applets on this site.
Since this page was first posted, Apple's Safari browser has disabled the ability to run Java applets.
The various demonstrations on this site ask you to download pre-prepared configuration files. Among the browsers I have tested, here are the commands used to direct a downloaded file to a specific directory.
